One of the ways to win Allah’s favor and forgiveness is to cultivate good character. We obtain this good character by following and applying in our daily lives what we have learned from Allah and His Messenger Muhammad (PBUH). The Qur’an and the sayings (ahadith) are the tools we must use to attain this favor and forgiveness. Once we learn, we must practice until Allah makes our feet firm. The very first thing we must focus on is the prohibitions of Allah. Until we treat prohibited things as truly prohibited and unlawful, we will never be sincere in word and deed. We must realize that belief in Allah is a covenant and a promise—the most sacred oath a created being could ever take. It is a promise to Allah to be obedient. Obedience is the first step and the key to good character.
